SYDNEY — Australia will head to the polls in a federal election on May 3, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Friday, with cost-of-living pressures at the forefront of what is expected to be a close race that could result in a minority government.

Kicking off the five-week campaign, Albanese claimed that under his watch Australia had “turned a corner” amid tough global economic conditions. He said the country would be worse off under his conservative opponents, whom he accused of planning service cuts.
