NEW YORK — The U.S. on Monday announced sanctions targeting Hong Kong Justice Secret Paul Lam as well as five other Hong Kongers and mainland Chinese who have played a role in eroding Hong Kong’s freedoms and in connection with acts of what Washington calls “transnational repression.”
The State Department designated Lam; Sonny Au, secret-general for the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; and Dong Jingwei, director of China’s national security office overseeing Hong Kong. The other three targets are Police Commissioner Raymond Siu and two assistant commissioners of the national security police: Dick Chung Chun Wong and Margaret Chiu.
