Prime Minister to meet businessmen over energy sector reforms
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to meet with prominent businessmen on Thursday to discuss proposed reforms in the power sector, according to sources from the Ministry of Finance.
The delegation of businessmen will be led by former caretaker minister for industries and commerce, Gohar Ejaz. During the meeting, a significant reduction in electricity tariffs is expected, along with discussions on exports and other economic matters.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at 2:00 PM at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
Recently, the International Monet Fund (IMF) permitted the government to lower electricity tariffs by Rs1 per kilowatt-hour for all consumers. This relief will be funded through revenue collected from a levy imposed on captive power plants that run on natural gas, as stated by the IMF.
The government is working on a broader relief package for electricity consumers, and official sources indicate that this reduction could ease the financial burden on consumers by up to Rs100 billion.
