Sports promote positive change, international solidarity: says PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to leveraging sports as a powerful medium for social progress, unity, and youth empowerment.

In a message marking the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) observed globally on April 6, the premier emphasized the transformative power of sports in breaking barriers and fostering solidarity beyond borders.

“Pakistan stands in solidarity with the international community on this important occasion,” the Prime Minister stated, underlining that sports serve as an effective tool for advancing national development, nurturing talent, and showcasing the country’s identity on the global stage.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to making sports a central pillar of its development agenda, with a national policy that prioritizes grassroots inclusion, gender equality, and comprehensive support for emerging athletes.

Highlighting key initiatives, PM Shehbaz mentioned the establishment of the Arshad Nadeem/Shehbaz Sharif High Performance Academy, which aims to scientifically train athletes and provide them with modern facilities and financial assistance to prepare for future challenges.

“Good management is the foundation for strong sports,” he said, adding that the government is introducing reforms to promote transparency, accountability, and professionalism in national sports federations. These steps are intended to enhance institutional discipline, ensure merit-based selection, and uphold sportsmanship and moral values.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in Pakistan’s potential to become a regional hub for sports and tourism, pointing to upcoming nationwide training camps and the hosting of the 14th South Asian Games in 2026 as pivotal moments in this journey.

He also called on civil society, development partners, and stakeholders to integrate sports into broader national policies on education, health, development, and peace.

“Let us join hands to strengthen our sports ecosystem and build an empowered, inclusive, and sustainable society,” the Prime Minister concluded.
