TOKYO — Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and his Singaporean counterpart, Lawrence Wong, on Monday agreed the two countries would “cooperate closely” to promote a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific as escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing overshadow global trade.

The leaders discussed economic issues during a telephone call, “taking into account the impact of the U.S. tariff measures and China’s retaliatory actions on the global economy and the multilateral free trade system,” Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
