WASHINGTON — The U.S. on Thursday introduced a new fee structure for Chinese ship owners, operators of vessels constructed in China and all foreign-built car carriers, aiming to encourage the use of ships produced on American shores.
In a news release, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said the action was needed to address China’s unreasonable acts, policies and practices that allow it to dominate global shipbuilding. The collected fees will be used to revive American shipyards, it said.
