TOKYO — Japan and the U.K. agreed Wednesday to allow smoother cross-border transfers of personal data in academia and the public sector, a move seen spurring drug development and medical research, Nikkei has learned.

The countries already have an arrangement that allows businesses to easily transfer personal data across borders. This arrangement will be expanded to include research institutions and government agencies by next spring under a joint statement signed by Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission and the British Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
