HONG KONG — With the U.S. issuing new worldwide restrictions on the use of Huawei Technologies’ artificial intelligence chips, Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings said Wednesday that it has enough previously acquired high-end chips to sustain its AI training “for generations” and is exploring ways to boost AI inference efficiency, including through software optimization.

“You have to manage the situation — on one end, you deal with it in a completely compliant way, and on the other end, we are trying to figure out the right solution to make sure that our AI strategy can still be executed,” Tencent President Martin Lau said on a conference call with analysts.
