TOKYO/HANOI — Vietnam’s auto sales in the first quarter of this year grew a strong 24%, year on year, rising faster than in Southeast Asia’s bigger car markets, thanks to favorable economic trends in the country.

Nikkei Asia compiled Janu to March sales data from industry groups in Southeast Asia’s five biggest markets: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam. Total auto sales in the five countries stood at about 732,898 vehicles, down 1.7% from a year earlier.
