WASHINGTON — The Trump administration’s efforts to bring shipbuilding back to the U.S. by charging high port fees on Chinese-owned, -operated and -built ships, as well as slapping new tariffs on Chinese-built cranes, drew strong pushback from industry insiders Monday.
At a public hearing led by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative here, discussions were limited to a proposed 100% tariff on ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and proposed tariffs of 20% to 100% on such cargo-handling equipment as containers, chassis and chassis parts.
