Why Karachi’s Electricity Got Cheaper? While others it’s expensive across the country?
ISLAMABAD: In a recent tariff adjustment, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has created a notable disparity in electricity prices across the country, bringing relief to Karachi while increasing the burden on consumers elsewhere.
According to NEPRA’s latest notifications, electricity prices for K-Electric customers have been reduced by Rs. 2.99 per unit. This adjustment, based on March 2025’s monthly fuel charges, will reflect in the June electricity bills for Karachi residents.
In contrast, power consumers in the rest of the country will face a rise of 93 paisa per unit due to the fuel cost adjustment for April 2025. The increase, also applicable in June, will raise electricity bills for millions outside Karachi.
NEPRA has issued separate notifications for both regions, indicating the dual impact of differing fuel price calculations. While Karachi citizens benefit from reduced costs, the rest of Pakistan will bear an additional financial load just as temperatures soar and energy consumption spikes during the summer months.
The move has sparked public debate over regional pricing fairness, as citizens question why Karachi receives concessions while others are made to pay more. NEPRA, however, maintains that these changes are strictly based on fuel usage and supplier-specific data.
