MACAO — China’s desire to diversify Macao’s economy is likely to be complicated by its insistence on national security as an all-encompassing priority, as the city embarks on a new era under its next chief executive, according to Au Kam-san, one of the few local advocates of democracy.

The global casino capital’s chief executive election on Sunday went as expected, with former top judge and sole contender Sam Hou-fai winning the top job. He will start his five-year term on Dec. 20, the 25th annivers of the handover of the city from Portuguese rule.
