KUMAMOTO — As the semiconductor industry boom intensifies traffic woes in the metropolitan area of Kumamoto prefecture, local authorities and financial institutions are taking action, introducing staggered work hours and telecommuting to ease the gridlock and steer the region toward sustainable development.

Kumamoto prefecture and Kumamoto city on Japan’s southernmost main island of Kyushu have rolled out the initiatives for some 4,000 staff members, while the Kyushu Financial Group (FG) and its subsidi Higo Bank are also stepping up to the plate to untangle the mess.
