Loganair operates the world’s shortest scheduled flight, connecting the Orkney Islands of Westray and Papa Westray in Scotland, which takes less than two minutes. Unlike typical long and tedious flights, this unique Scottish journey lasts just one and a half minutes.
At times, the flying time on the short flight between Westray and Papa Westray can drop below a minute, making it faster than preparing instant noodles. Pilot Stuart Linklater achieved the fastest recorded flight on this route in an impressive 53 seconds.
Loganair launched flights on the route in 1967, quickly breaking the record for the world’s shortest scheduled flight. The journey operates daily in both directions, except on Saturdays. Reports indicate that Stuart Linklater completed the flight over 12,000 times, more than any other pilot, despite retiring in 2013. He still holds the record for the fastest flight time.
The flight covers a distance of approximately 2.7 kilometers, which is roughly the same length as the runway at Edinburgh Airport. This service is part of a triangle route that connects to Kirkwall. Loganair uses Britten-Norman BN2B-26 Islander aircraft for the journey, which can seat up to 10 passengers. Because the plane is small, those seated in the front row can watch the pilot fly the aircraft.
With just 70 residents, Papa Westray relies heavily on this flight for vital connections to the mainland. Over the years, this short journey has attracted tourists eager to experience its uniqueness. Despite lasting only about a minute, the flight provides passengers a quick glimpse into the tranquil life on the Orkney Islands, renowned for their natural beauty and quiet charm.
Whether locals or visitors, passengers enjoy stunning island views, offering an escape from the fast pace of modern life.
