With the introduction of the Corporate Governance Code in 2015 and continued investor pressure for increased boardroom independence, the number of external directors appointed to Japan’s boards has dramatically increased over the past decade. The number of women serving on boards has also risen sharply in recent years. Yet there is still a tremendous opportunity to strengthen boards by overcoming geographic and language barriers and considering global talent, including non-Japanese and Japanese residing overseas.
