al Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced an 18 paisa per unit reduction in electricity prices for Karachi residents under the September 2024 monthly adjustment, effective in the December 2024 bills. However, this reduction will not apply to consumers using up to 300 units per month.
Earlier, K-Electric had requested a 16 paisa per unit reduction and sought permission to refund Rs 247 million to consumers as part of this adjustment.
In contrast, NEPRA had approved a 40 paisa per unit increase for K-Electric consumers for the August 2024 adjustment, which will be reflected in Janu 2025 bills. Additionally, K-Electric consumers will pay an extra Rs 3.17 per unit for the November 2024 bills as part of the June adjustment and Rs 3.03 per unit for the December bills under the July 2024 adjustment.
K-Electric had initially asked for a 51 paisa per unit increase for the August adjustment but NEPRA approved a 40 paisa increase. The revised tariff notifications indicate that consumers will face higher electricity costs.
In November, K-Electric also imposed a Rs 2.17 per unit adjustment, bringing the total price to Rs 4.91 per unit, in addition to a quarterly adjustment of Rs 1.74 per unit as part of the fuel price variation mechanism. This follows an earlier Rs 2.59 per unit hike for October, which placed additional financial pressure on consumers.
