FRANKFURT, Germany — BASF wants to expand its reach in the “completely undersupplied” market of southern China, where the multinational chemicals producer is building its third-largest integrated site, Chief Technology Officer Stephan Kothrade told Nikkei Asia in a recent interview.

Based in the German city of Ludwigshafen, BASF is the world’s largest chemicals company by sales. Its products and services are found in nearly every aspect of modern life. To name a few, it manufactures items ranging from sneaker sole materials to wood preservatives and insecticides; it purifies natural gas and develops durable asphalt.
