Customs officials at Allama Iqbal International Airport successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle high-value mobile phones on Thursday, seizing 37 iPhones worth approximately Rs. 11.5 million.

The operation, led by Assistant Collector Customs Simrah and Superintendent Shahid Ali under the supervision of Collector Customs Airports Tayyeba Kayani, was conducted based on specific intelligence provided by the Collector’s office.

The suspect, Umer Farooq, who arrived from Sharjah on a Fly Jinnah flight, was apprehended after a thorough search of his belongings uncovered the concealed smartphones, which had not been declared as per customs regulations.

Initial investigations revealed that the smuggled phones were likely intended for the black market, where their value is significantly inflated due to evasion of customs duties and taxes. Officials highlighted that such activities undermine the national economy by depriving the state of vital revenue.

Collector Customs Tayyeba Kayani commended her team’s vigilance and prompt action, reaffirming their dedication to combating smuggling and safeguarding economic interests.

“This operation reflects the unwavering commitment of our officers to curbing illegal trade and protecting the country’s financial stability,” she stated.
