TAIPEI — Taiwanese authorities have accused China’s top chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. and other Chinese tech companies of operating illegally on the island and poaching local engineers, allegations that follow Taiwan’s biggest investigation this year on this front.

The Investigation Bureau, part of the Ministry of Justice, told Nikkei Asia that it dispatched 180 inspectors to 34 locations across six cities between March 18 and March 27, searching a total of 11 Chinese tech companies and questioning over 90 people.
