Chicken meat prices in Karachi have surged highest, now being sold for over Rs800 per kilogram, even though the official rate is set at Rs650.
Shopkeepers are blaming poultry farmers for the soaring prices, as they report that they are purchasing chicken at higher rates from the farmers, making it impossible to sell at the government-mandated price.
People in the city are demanding that authorities take strict action against those overcharging, saying consumers are being unfairly burdened.
On the other hand, poultry traders say the price hike is due to higher demand during the Eid holidays, disruptions in supply, and rising costs of chicken feed.
