TOKYO — The Chinese Communist Party, with nearly 100 million members, is similar in structure to a Japanese company in that it is largely insulated from outside criticism. And this could explain why Chinese President Xi Jinping is choosing to ratchet up the tariff war with the U.S.
“It’s very similar to a company, especially a Japanese company,” Takashi Suzuki, a professor at Japan’s Daito Bunka University, said of the Chinese Communist Party. Suzuki analyzed the ruling structure of the party in a recent book.
