TOKYO — After rising to its strongest level in months, the yen softened against the dollar Thursday morning after U.S.-Japan tariff talks steered clear of currency matters, but market watchers remain on guard for pressure from Washington.

The Japanese currency had appreciated as far as 141.6 yen against the greenback going into the meeting, but retreated when Ryosei Akazawa, Japan’s minister for economic and fiscal policy, said afterward that currencies had not been discussed.
