BANGKOK/KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is attempting to use Myanmar’s devastating earthquake to forge a breakthrough in the country’s protracted civil war between the milit regime and opposition forces.

Anwar, the current ASEAN chair, met regime leader Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing in Bangkok on Thursday evening for more than an hour and Mahn Win Khaing Than, the prime minister of the National Unity Government, Myanmar’s parallel administration, on Friday morning via video conference.
