TOKYO — Amid intensifying international competition for “digital nomads,” local Japanese governments are looking to draw these mobile workers to destinations beyond the big cities they usually favor.
While Japan saw a record 163.6 million overnight stays by foreign travelers last year, up 38.9% on the year, around 70% were in the three major urban areas of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. Stays in outlying regions, meanwhile, averaged just 1.36 nights per person.
