TOKYO — The volume of Japanese exports fell on the year in the April-September half as an economic downturn in China and idling automobile demand in the U.S. ate into the benefits of the soft yen.

The country recorded a trade deficit of 3.11 trillion yen ($20.6 billion) for the April-September term, marking a seventh straight fiscal half in the red, official data on goods trade showed Thursday. The deficit widened 14.4% from a year earlier.
