TOKYO — Japan and the U.S. will soon hold elections that will determine the direction of each country. The U.S. appears on track to continue on its inward-looking trajectory no matter which presidential candidate wins, albeit to a lesser or greater degree depending on the victor.
The American divisions are not likely to heal easily, and the world is likely to remain divided for an extended period. Tensions between the U.S. and China will be a contributing factor, along with the crisis in Ukraine and the conflicts in the Middle East.
