TOKYO — Japanese automakers Honda Motor and Nissan Motor announced on Monday that they plan to set up a joint holding company by August 2026, with the aim of rapidly developing electrification and software integration to stay competitive in the global market.

The companies on the same day signed a memorandum of understanding to start discussing a business integration under a new holding company. The goal is for Honda and Nissan to sign a definitive agreement by June 2025.
