SEOUL — The criminal trial of former President Yoon Suk Yeol started on Monday with South Korea preparing for early June, when a snap election will determine the disgraced politician’s replacement.

Yoon attended a Seoul district court hearing. The former chief prosecutor was charged with insurrection during a short-lived martial law in early December. He was removed from office earlier this month as the Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment of the National Assembly, the country’s legislature.
