PALO ALTO, California — New Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said Thursday he recently met with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to discuss ways to collaborate on a “win-win” situation as the U.S. chip giant struggles to ramp up its foundry business.
While most American semiconductor companies have gone fabless — meaning they only design chips and outsource production to contract chipmakers such as TSMC — Intel retains the integrated device manufacturing (IDM) model, meaning it both designs and manufactures chips.
