- This initiative follows her own experience with a deepfake video.
Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna was recently appointed as India’s national ambassador for cyber safety. This project is inspired by her personal encounter with a deepfake AI-generated video that went viral online the previous year and sparked important conversations about digital security. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) of the Ministry of Home Affairs announced her appointment on Tuesday.
As part of her new position, Rashmika will spearhead national campaigns to increase public awareness of cyberthreats such as deepfake videos, online fraud, cyberbullying, and malicious artificial intelligence content.
She pledged her support for the cause, stating, “Cybercrime is a dangerous and pervasive threat that affects individuals, businesses, and communities worldwide. As someone who has experienced this, I am dedicated to raising awareness about these issues and promoting the message of cyber safety to drive positive change.”
Rashmika also shared a video on Instagram, where she mentioned, “Sometime back, my deepfake video was shared on social media, which was and is a cybercrime. After this incident, I decided to take a stand against cybercrime and spread awareness.” The Ministry of Home Affairs believes that Rashmika’s involvement will significantly bolster efforts to create a safer digital environment.
After the November 6, 2023, deepfake incident involving her, Rasgmika became more vocal about the importance of online safety.
