TOKYO — Japan faces a tough task in securing a deal to ease the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff-driven trade policies, but an even greater challenge lies in restoring trust in Washington amid doubts over whether Trump’s America still shares the values that have long underpinned the alliance.
